What a Playlist Import Really Adds to Music Assistant

By default, importing a provider playlist into Music Assistant adds the playlist itself to the library—not every track listed inside it. The playlist remains streamable, and you can add individual tracks manually. To import every referenced track as a separate library item, enable Import playlist tracks for selected playlists (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

The key is to separate three concepts:

  • content available through a connected provider;
  • a playlist imported into the Music Assistant library;
  • tracks imported individually into that library.

A track may be visible, browsable or playable without having individual library membership. Those states are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The three states at a glance

Music Assistant reads music from connected sources such as streaming services, local storage and media servers. It combines the items you add into one library, while source-specific synchronization settings control how much content enters that library (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

State Playlist is a library item Referenced tracks are individual library items What remains available
Source connected; this playlist not imported No No, unless imported another way Content may be searchable or browsable, depending on the source
Playlist imported with the default behavior Yes No The playlist can be streamed; tracks can be added manually
Selected playlist imported with Import playlist tracks Yes Yes The playlist and all its associated tracks are imported

The first row is deliberately qualified. A provider may synchronize some account-library playlists automatically, and providers differ in their supported media types, catalogue access and synchronization controls. Merely connecting a source does not mean that every item it exposes becomes a Music Assistant library item (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

Availability is not library membership

When you connect a source, Music Assistant can read the content that source exposes. Its general import controls cover media types including artists, albums, tracks and playlists, but the available controls and behavior can vary by source (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

Provider documentation illustrates the distinction. With Local Files, tracks can still be browsed when track import is disabled (Local Files provider documentation). Apple Music places saved artists, albums and playlists alongside a wider catalogue that is available for search and browsing (Apple Music provider documentation).

Search or browse access therefore answers one question: “Can Music Assistant find this?” Import answers another: “Has this item been added to my Music Assistant library?”

The same distinction applies to playback. Music Assistant explicitly documents that a playlist imported without its associated tracks can still be streamed. Successful playback shows that Music Assistant can access and stream the playlist; it does not prove that every referenced song has become an individual track-library item (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

What the default playlist import does

Under the documented default, importing a playlist adds only the playlist object. It does not automatically import each associated track as a separate library item. You can then add particular tracks manually if you want them in the track library (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

Consider a hypothetical rotating discovery playlist containing 80 songs. With the default configuration, the playlist becomes a streamable library item, but the 80 referenced songs do not enter the track library solely because they appear in that playlist. If you want to retain three of them individually, you can add those three manually.

This approach can suit temporary, large or frequently changing playlists. You retain the playlist without automatically adding every song that passes through it to your track collection.

How to import a selected playlist’s tracks

Open Settings → Music Sources, select the relevant source and find its Library Import Control settings. The general source documentation says music-source settings are configurable and identifies Import playlist tracks as the control that overrides the playlist-only default (Music Assistant music-source documentation).

For a playlist selected through this setting, Music Assistant imports all associated tracks in addition to the playlist. You can identify the playlist using either:

  • its case-sensitive playlist name; or
  • its playlist URI.

The documentation does not specify how duplicate names are resolved or which URI formats individual providers accept. Nor does it establish that every provider exposes or implements this option identically. Consult the relevant provider page and the settings shown in your Music Assistant installation before relying on it.

Selective configuration provides a useful middle ground. A rotating discovery playlist can remain playlist-only, while a permanent favourites playlist can contribute all its songs to the track library. If you need only a few tracks, manual selection avoids importing the complete playlist contents.

Provider rules can affect which playlists appear

The associated-track setting matters only once a provider has exposed the playlist to Music Assistant. Provider-specific visibility rules can determine whether a playlist appears in the first place.

Apple Music

With Apple Music connected, saved artists, albums and playlists appear in Music Assistant, while the broader catalogue can be searched and browsed (Apple Music provider documentation). That searchable catalogue should not be confused with a wholesale library import: availability through search does not establish individual library membership.

YouTube Music

With YouTube Music connected, the account library and playlists appear in Music Assistant, and its catalogue can be searched (YouTube Music provider documentation).

YouTube Music also has a provider-specific visibility rule. By default, only liked music and the “episodes for later” playlists are added to the YouTube Music library and therefore appear in Music Assistant. To make other personal playlists appear, you must first add them to your library in the YouTube Music web app (YouTube Music provider documentation).

That produces two separate stages: YouTube Music determines whether a personal playlist is visible to Music Assistant, while Music Assistant’s import configuration determines whether the playlist’s tracks are imported individually.

The YouTube Music integration is documented as best-effort because YouTube does not provide an official API for retrieving its data and streams. That caveat is specific to this provider (YouTube Music provider documentation).

Choosing the right import behavior

Use playlist-only import when you want convenient access to a streamable playlist without adding every referenced song to the track library. Enable Import playlist tracks for selected playlists whose complete contents should become individual library items. For a smaller subset, keep the default and add tracks manually.

If a playlist does not appear at all, investigate the provider’s visibility and synchronization rules before changing the associated-track setting.

Documentation checked October 9, 2026. No playback, synchronization or database testing was performed. The documentation does not establish identical support across every provider.
